Artist Statement

In art school, I developed the fundamentals of drawing and painting, from color mixing to understanding values. However, Upon graduating, I felt a bit “lost”, without much direction…

My fascination with the French Impressionists ignited during high school. I was captivated by Van Gogh’s vibrant palette and, over time, became deeply inspired by Monet, Renoir, Sisley, and Pissarro.

In 2011, I took my first class at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA, and was immediately enchanted by the school’s rich history and the captivating light of Provincetown. A year later, I was honored to receive a scholarship to study at this historic institution, founded by Charles Hawthorne and shaped by his master pupil, Henry Hensche, over a century ago.  At the Cape School of Art I was about to hone my skills under the tutelage of renowned artists teaching at the Provincetown school. The training helped me develop an understanding and approach to color, emphasizing the importance of continuous observation and comparison—focusing on the nuances of one color note from another.

In my recent work, I confidently blend strong draftsmanship along with a heightened sense and understanding of the light key and atmospheric effects, painted using a full chromatic palette. The beauty of Cape Cod’s local landscape and its surroundings often inspires me, and I frequently include figures in my compositions. My painting practice is enriched by en plein air color studies and personal photo references. I invite viewers to experience the scene as I or the model might have, a connection that can only be felt through a deep study of light and color.
